Painted Dreams enjoyed a good deal of success, but Phillips couldn't talk WGN management into taking it national.
Although originally unsponsored, Phillips would add an engagement and wedding to the plot in order to maximize product tie-ins. Irna Phillips, an actress and staff writer for talk shows on WGN, Chicago, was given the assignment of creating a 15 minute daily show "about a family."The result was Painted Dreams, a story of Mother Moynihan and her unmarried daughter. The Housewife was busy taking care of the home, and would have the radio on as company. Originally broadcast in the evening, the show was moved to daytime on Feb 15, 1932. Interest soon grew and Colgate-Palmolive soon took sponsorship. WGN-AM, Chicago, is credited with the very first soap opera, Clara, Lu, and Em, premiering Jun 16, 1930.The act began as sorority sketch by three friends Louise Starkey (Clara), Isobel Carothers (Lu), and Helen King (Em),at Northwestern University it was popular enough that friends suggested they take it to radio.The trio approached WGN and did the first shows without pay. That left the Housewife, by herself a powerful market force. It was reasoned that Men would be away from home working, and Children either at school or playing. Steffy SENDS Taylor to Aspen, she does not go with her.By 1930 the Networks and the Advertisers recognized the great potential of the Daytime market. That is where the spoiler goes off the rails. The man/horse wedding she rode the horse to stop the wedding because his children were up to their old tricks and games and kept them apart. She will know she finished her marriage and Brooke does not chase Ridge unless they have been duped by someone. I think it is going to be her, but I cannot see her going to Aspen then. That is why people think it is not going to be her that calls CPS. She keeps things from him, but when asked, she tells him the truth. If Brooke lies right to his face when asked, it will be the first time. Otherwise, they would snap to the truth that Ridge doesn't need protection from Brooke it's Taylor and themselves that need protection from Ridge. The Tridge kids are too close to the forest to see the trees and too distracted by Brooke, the big, nasty, rabid squirrel constantly sabotaging and undermining them to realize that. The love of Ridge's life is neither Brooke nor Taylor it's Ridge Forrester. That way, it is impossible for Taylor to move on for good with some other man or her children to let her, because any second now, Dad, who is getting fed up with trying to save his miserable marriage to their Wicked Stepmonster, will be returning home. He transmits enough mixed messages to Taylor and her children to Keep Hope Alive. Ridge IS engaged in a romantic pursuit of Taylor. Especially where it comes to kissing and putting the moves on the ex-wife still carrying a torch for him.
He could have refrained from using his family with Taylor to soothe his ego. He is a wealthy man who could present Hope with the accomplished fact of buying Hope her own home which Deacon could visit to his heart 's content.
Ridge could have paid attention without moving into the beach house with Taylor and Steffy and whining about Brooke and her antics. And includes exceptional events that threaten safety and harmony like a devastating accident, illness, or legal issue. Get togethers that involve ceremonies celebrating or commemorating milestones like baptisms, graduations job promotions, births, and funerals. Birthday cards, Christmas cards, Mother's Day cards. Paying attention involves simple acknowledgement.
